Ronny Joe West

December 27, 1948 – November 28, 2024

Age 75

Ronny Joe West was the third son born to Howard and Robbie Clark West. Some of his most cherished memories were shaped by his upbringing in Gipson Hollow, alongside his parents and siblings-brothers Larry and Ralph, and sister Debbie. On April 19, 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Donnietta McCormick West. Together, they built a life they both adored, remaining inseparable and deeply in love for 55 years. Their first child, Sonja Leigh West Smallwood, was born on August 4, 1970, and their second child, Joseph Clark West, followed on February 1, 1984. Later, they joyfully welcomed Jeff Smallwood and Shannon West into their family as beloved in-laws. In time, they became grandparents to Haleigh (Neylan) Spivey, Orry Smallwood and his fiancée Katie Taylor, Nolan West, Brooklyn Hewitt, and Hayden Hewitt, and great-grandparents to Heath Spivey.

After high school, Ronny trained as a brick mason, but his first job was at West Service Center, where he pumped gas. He later found great success as a Sales Representative for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance, even ranking 10th in the nation in sales at one point. His dedication led him to become an Area Manager there. He also worked as a local banker and loan officer at Jackson County Bank and Jackson Bank and Trust. Ronny also tried his hand at broadcasting, hosting the local news on WLIV, and owned his own small business for many years.

Ronny was a proud member of Tannehill Lodge #133 for over 50 years and was also a Shriner. His love for his community was evident in his involvement with numerous local organizations, including the JC Historical Society, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary Club. He even served as the County Historian for many years, always striving to see Gainesboro thrive.

Traveling was one of Ronny's great joys, and he relished exploring new places and cultures. Germany was a particular favorite, where he had the unique experience of retracing the steps of his father during World War II. Ronny was also an avid movie enthusiast with a love for films across all genres. A natural prankster and a gifted storyteller, he brought laughter and joy to those around him. He enjoyed his daily cup of coffee and had a fondness for chocolate candy.

Above all, Ronny was a devoted and God-fearing man, a loving husband, father, and a steadfast friend. These were the true hallmarks of his life, and he will always be remembered and deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry West.
