What To Do When a Death Occurs

Take a deep breath. We're here to guide you through every step. Here's what you can do right now:

1

Notify the Appropriate Authorities

If your loved one was not under hospice care, police must be notified immediately. They will contact the coroner or medical examiner, who will remove the body and determine next steps. The coroner must release the body before a funeral home can be involved.

If hospice care was active, contact the hospice representative first — they will handle proper procedures and notifications. Staff at hospitals, nursing homes, or hospice facilities will notify family and authorities and, if a funeral home was pre-designated, will contact us directly.

2

Contact a Funeral Director

A funeral director will ask about your loved one's wishes and arrange a meeting, typically within 24 hours. We will obtain death certificates, arrange transportation of the body, and — if no pre-planning occurred — help you select caskets or urns and arrange services. We can also help notify employers and insurance companies.

3

Gather Important Documents

When you're able, gather the following. Don't worry if you can't locate everything right away — we can help obtain what is needed.

For the death certificate:

  • Full name and address
  • Marital status, race/ethnicity
  • Birth date and place of birth
  • Education level
  • Parents' full names (including mother's maiden name)
  • Spouse's name and information
  • Occupation and employer details

Legal documents that may be needed:

  • Account statements
  • Insurance policies
  • Property deeds and stock certificates
  • Wills and tax returns
  • Outstanding bills and financial agreements
  • Military discharge papers (DD-214) if a veteran
4

Begin Final Arrangements

Our experienced staff will help ease the process despite the emotional strain. Arrangement decisions will include:

  • Scheduling visitation and funeral dates
  • Selecting burial or cremation
  • Choosing funeral products (casket, urn, etc.)
  • Arranging cemetery plots
  • Preparing the obituary
  • Scheduling transportation
