Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Carter, 93, of Gainesboro, TN, will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2020, at 2 P.M. at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro, TN. Burial will follow in the Rob Draper Memorial Cemetery in the Stone community of Jackson County, TN. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4 P.M. - 8 P.M., and Sunday from 12 Noon until time of services. She passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2020, at Mabry Health Care Center in Gainesboro, TN. She was born May 28, 1927, in Whitleyville, TN, to the late John Taylor Cherry and Ethel Mai Butler Cherry. On October 7, 1952, she was married to her husband of 46 years, the late Sid Carter. They lived in Lafayette, TN, until moving to Gainesboro. She was a 1946 graduate of Jackson County High School. She was on the varsity basketball team, and also played for the Nashville Business College. After school, she worked for Washington Manufacturing Co., and later for the George W. Johnson Insurance Agency in Lafayette. She worked there for 30 years until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the Gainesboro Church of Christ, and a founding member of the Wartrace Homemakers Club. She enjoyed the activities of the club, especially cooking for the shut-ins. Two of her favorite pastimes were piecing quilts and doing crafts. Her utmost pleasure was working in her flowers. She has beautiful flowers and grew award winning iris. She was devoted to her family, and a wonderful cook who always wanted her family and friends to visit. She always had a good home cooked meal for them. She was a very loving, caring, and generous person, who was loved by everyone who knew her. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 1 Sister: Jo Cason Cook; 1 Brother: James E. Cherry, Sr.; and 2 Nephews: James E. Cherry, Jr. and Joey Chapman. Survivors include 1 Sister: Carol Chapman of Franklin, TN; 2 Nephews: John Cason of Whitleyville, TN, and Jeff Chapman of Nashville, TN; 2 Nieces: Cherry Cason (Anthony) Ramsey of Whitleyville, TN, and Amy Chapman (Robert) Wright of Austin, TX; Great Nephews: Mason Chapman Wright and Hunter Chapman Wright of Austin, TX; Bradley (Stacie) Cherry, Greg (Liz) Cherry, and John (Amanda) Cherry of Grayson, KY; Great Great Nephews: EJ and Jennings Cherry of Grayson, KY; and Special Care Givers: Linda Young, Shirley Harper, Kay Kirby, Wanda Dodson, and Mary Crowder. Special thanks to Mabry Health Care and Rehab Center for their amazing care. Dan Huffines and John Cason will officiate at the services. Memorial donations may be made to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Fund by contacting the funeral home.
