Funeral services for Layton Grogan, 88, of Gainesboro, TN, will be held at 1 P.M. on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Anderson Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the John L. Clark Memorial Cemetery in Gainesboro, TN. The family will receive friends from 4 P.M. – 8 P.M. on Friday, and from 11 A.M. until time of services on Saturday. Layton passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at his home.
He was born April 5, 1935, in Putnam County, TN, to the late William Haskell and Sarah Nancy Jane Dunn Grogan. He graduated from Cookeville Central High in 1954. He served in the Army National Guard from 1952-1956. In 1955, he married Joy West and moved to Jackson Co., TN, and went on to have two children, Bruce and Jeanetta. Layton owned and operated West Service Center for 32 years. He also served eight years as Register of Deeds. He was first to computerize the office.
Layton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved the outdoors. He loved to golf, hunt, and fish. He was a loyal fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and loved to watch them play. He was a faithful member of the McCoinsville Church of Christ, and he loved his church family. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Layton was preceded in death by his brothers: Haskell, Jr., Austin, twin brother Payton, Donald Howard, and Harold Kenneth Grogan; Sisters: Ara Farley and Beatrice Elmore; and Daughter-in-law: Shirley Grogan.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 68 years: Joy West Grogan; 1 Son: William Bruce Grogan of Cookeville, TN; 1 Daughter: Jeanetta Grogan Johnson and her husband David Blake Johnson of Gainesboro, TN; 2 Grandchildren: Blake Tyler Johnson and wife Cassie of Cookeville, TN, and Thad Layton Johnson and wife Cristen of Hendersonville, TN; 1 Step Grandson: Shane Elridge of Cookeville, TN; and 2 Great Grandchildren: Wyatt Blake Johnson and Taylor Marie Whiting of Cookeville, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Bro. Duane Gossett, Bro. Matthew Scoggins, and Bro. Jimmy Anderson will officiate at the services.
