Lawrence Frederick Morris
September 25, 1932 – September 27, 2022
Age 90
Lawrence Frederick Morris, age 90, of Cookeville, Tennessee passed away early Tuesday morning, September 27, 2022 at Mabry Health Care in Gainsboro, Tennessee. Larry died peacefully with family by his side.
Born on September 25, 1932 in Glen Cove, New York, he was the son of the late Leon and Beatrice (nee Plumb) Morris. The family moved to Aruba in 1946 where Larry attended and graduated from Lago Community High School in 1951. After graduation, Larry immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. The Navy eventually brought him to the NSA Mid-South naval base in Millington, TN in April 1952. It was there that he met the late Margaret Brigman who would soon become the love of his lifetime.
Larry and Margaret married on July 17, 1952 and after Larry finished his time in the navy in 1955, they moved back to Glen Cove where they had their first two children, Larry Frederick Jr and Connie Lee. In 1960, Larry and Marge picked up and moved the family back to Tennessee and settled in Memphis where they had two more children, Tanya Marie and Jon Leon.
Larry moved around to different jobs and companies until he settled into his factory position at Owens-Illinois where he proudly served as President of the labor union. In August of 1977, Larry Jr., their eldest son was lost in an automobile accident.
In September of 1987, Larry retired from Owens-Illinois and moved to Allons, Tennessee where he owned and operated the L&M Package Store, which he walked to every day from his home next door. For the next 23 years, Larry would become a trusted friend to the many regulars that would come into his store for beer, pickled eggs, pigs feet, punch-board games, and candy. On May 10, 2002, Larry would lose his beloved Marge to a prolonged illness.
In 2010, Larry sold the store and his home in Allons, and moved to Cookeville, Tennessee. He enjoyed his final years there with the late Alice Hubbard Hacker, but it was also here that he lost his youngest son, Jon to sickness on October 3rd, 2018. A car accident in May brought Alice and him to rehab at the Mabry Healthcare nursing home, where Alice passed ahead of him on May 19th 2022.
Larry brought humor and laughter to every gathering he was a part of and was deeply loved by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, neighbors, and friends. He leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law Connie and David Frazier of Cookeville, TN; his daughter and son-in-law Tanya and Chris Syvertsen of Guilford, CT; son-in-law Brad Cunningham of Clinton, CT; granddaughter Cameron Brown with her husband Justin and great-granddaughters Holly and Addison; grandson Brad Cunningham Jr. and great-grandson Sawyer; granddaughter Brook Murphy and her husband Justin and great-granddaughter Aria, and great-grandsons Wellington-Lawrence and Barrett; granddaughter Amber Scovell with her husband Stephen and great-grandson Parker.
Larry’s life and stories will live on forever in the hearts and memories of those who called him dad, pawpaw, Larry, and friend.
