Alton G. Carter

Funeral services for Mr. Alton G. Carter, 84, of Granville, Tennessee, will be held at 10 A.M. on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Anderson - Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro, TN. Burial will follow in the Granville Cemetery in Granville, TN. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 P.M. - 8 P.M., and Thursday from 9 A.M. until time of services. Mr. Carter passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at his residence. He was born May 13, 1925, in Jackson County, TN, to the late Lee Roy Carter and Fannie Roberts Carter. On July 25, 1948, he was married to Mildred Haile Carter, who survives. He was a retired warehouse manager at Big Dollar Warehouse in Sparta, TN. He was a member of the Granville United Methodist Church in Granville, TN; former President and Vice President of Granville Cemetery Association, an avid fisherman, and woodworker. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific, earning the rank Pharmacist's Mate Second Class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 Brothers: Farmer, Malcolm, Mack, and J. N. Carter; and 3 Sisters: Marie Carter Pharris, Emma Carter, and Vyda Carter Anderson. Survivors include his Wife: Mildred Haile Carter of Granville, TN; 2 Daughters and Sons-in-law: Carolyn and Robert Dudney of Cookeville, TN, and Jeannie and Allen Grimes of Kernersville, NC; 2 Grandchildren: Joshua Sprague and Kathryn Teague; and 1 Great Grandchild: Nathan Teague. Pastor Ernest Blair will officiate at the services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Granville Cemetery Fund by contacting the funeral home.
